DMU Lions head coach heads home

The DMU Lions are preparing for life without head coach Josh Seybert as he heads home for a full-time coaching role.

Josh has been a huge part of the Lions for the past 18 months as a player and now head coach.

It was a hard decision for Josh to leave but he said it was the right decision for him as opportunities like this don’t come up every day.

He said he has enjoyed his time in the UK, adding: “It’s been the journey of a lifetime, I have made some lifelong friends here, it’s a second home for me.”

Last season, Josh played as a scholarship student for the Lions, deciding to stay on as head coach for the new season. He has been a huge part of the Lions since he joined as he brought his knowledge of the game and his ability to coach with him.

Josh said: “A highlight from my DMU days was beating Nottingham greens 43-6 last season.”

This season hasn’t got off to the best start for the Lions with them currently having a 1-4 record. This compared to last season's 6-0 record which became 3-3 after three games were overturned due to DMU playing an ineligible player.

Josh is leaving DMU for a job in his home state of Kansas where he will become the defensive co-ordinator and strength and conditioning co-ordinator for Bethany College, Kansas.

Bethany College has lost every game for the past two seasons with their record being 0-10. As Josh said: “The only way is up.”

The major difference in the US is during the off-season, the coaches from colleges go around high schools recruiting for the new season. This is completely different in the UK where the recruitment is done on campus when students have already arrived.

The DMU Lions thanked Josh for everything he has done for the team and wished him well on his new challenge across the pond.
