Leicester’s Curve theatre kicks off Christmas with new production

The made at Curve production will be directed by the Leicester theatre’s artistic director, Nikolai Foster, whose most recent productions include Billy Elliot the Musical and A Chorus Line.

The production was originally meant to go ahead during Christmas 2020, but was postponed until 2021 due to the pandemic.

The production was then pushed back again to Christmas this year to coincide with a UK tour of the show in 2023. This production will be used to mark the premiere of the show.

Based on the popular MGM film, The Wizard of Oz will include well-known songs such as Somewhere over the rainbow and Follow the yellow brick road, along with new songs from Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice.

The lead role of Dorothy will be played by Georgina Onuorah, who will be joined by Ben Thompson in the role of Toto, who will be brought to life using puppetry.

One of the assistant stage managers, Naomi Ireland-Jones, said she enjoyed being in the room to see the show coming together: “It’s nice to be part of the creative process.

"All the moving pieces of the set need to be second nature to us by the time the show comes around. It’s like our body and brain already know it, which allows us to focus more on the welfare side of things when it comes to being in the wings during show night.”

Tickets for the show are on sale now and can be purchased from the curve website. The Wizard Of Oz - Curve Theatre, Leicester (curveonline.co.uk)
