One Pound Dan: Leicester’s beloved street icon tells his story

Leicester’s streets are home to many familiar faces, but none more well-known than Daniel Thomas, affectionately dubbed 'One Pound Dan' by locals. For nearly three decades, Dan, 46, has been a fixture in the city, famous for his warm personality and his simple request: “Got a spare pound?”
Dan’s journey has not been an easy one. In and out of hostels since 1997, he has lived most of his adult life on the streets. Estranged from his family, who he says abandoned him years ago, Dan has found community and connection in Leicester’s city centre.
“I ask politely, and people help out or they don’t,” he says with a smile. “Treat me with respect and I treat you with respect.”
While his life may not be conventional, Dan embraces it fully. Known for his friendly demeanour and willingness to chat, Dan has become something of a local icon. Sometimes recognised by his distinctive face tattoo, which bears a striking resemblance to Mike Tyson’s, he is a strong presence on the streets of Leicester.
When asked what led him here, Dan’s answer is straightforward. “Drugs took everything from me,” he admits, “but I don’t sit around feeling sorry for myself. I just keep going.”
Passers-by greet him with waves and kind words, and he often shares advice with the younger generation.
“I made mistakes, especially with drugs,” he admits. “I don’t want to go down that path anymore. If I can help someone avoid what I went through, then it’s worth it.”
Despite his hardships, Dan exudes a quiet contentment. “I might not have much, but I’ve got good energy. That’s what matters.”
For many in Leicester, Dan is not just a man. He is a symbol of resilience and humanity. His story reminds us that even in difficult circumstances, kindness can make all the difference.
